ASTM and UL Testing

ASTM International and Underwriters Laboratory (UL) are laboratories that test and grade materials for durability and capability. For shingles, fire, wind, and impact ratings are the most important.

  • Fire Rating: Due to the nature of asphalt, almost all shingles score an A on fire resistance. This is not generally something to worry about with this roofing type.

  • Wind Rating:The industry standard for wind ratings is 130mph. Nearly all architectural style shingles are rated for 130mph; however, some may require special installation instructions to achieve this rating, such as using extra nails. This can be difficult to track during installation and crews may be unaware of the specific installation requirements.

  • Impact Rating: The most competitive of the main ratings between shingle manufacturers. Due to the widespread prevalence of hail in the United States, impact ratings are becoming more and more important for new shingles.
